One platform for hundreds of classified programs

A Fortune 100 federal systems integrator supporting multiple agencies needed scalable, accredited storage to serve programs handling classified data. With BrickStor SP it consolidated disparate systems into an as-a-service model that scales to roughly 20 PB and supports multilevel security across DoD agencies.

With BrickStor SP, the SI was able to meet the relevant NIST Risk Management Framework requirements and the Executive Order on Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity for a data-centric Zero Trust architecture, real-time logging, secure supply chain, and encryption for data at rest and in flight.

RackTop Federal Case Study

The Challenge

The SI provides storage capacity to a variety of sponsoring agencies, so every solution must achieve Authorization to Operate (ATO) from all of them — meeting NIST Risk Management Framework controls and the Executive Order on Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity, including data-centric Zero Trust.

Provisioning infrastructure for each new contract was slow and costly, and disparate storage systems created sprawl. The SI wanted to consolidate into a single as-a-service platform that could handle modeling and simulation, HPC, AI/ML, and archive workloads — while maximizing efficiency for cost, size, weight, and power, and supporting multilevel security on a single system.

The Solution

After demonstrations and technical exchange meetings, the SI launched a pilot with three scalable systems across three core sites. RackTop’s cleared engineers supported each deployment with single-day, on-site configuration and installation.

The pilot proved the platform met workload requirements and could produce the integrated compliance reports and documentation needed for ATO. It moved to full operations — scaling to roughly 20 PB of usable capacity, with a fourth system deployed to centralize logs.

The Results
  • Government multilevel security (MLS) accreditation for a single system to support hundreds of programs with classified data.
  • Security controls to prevent insider threats, plus AI-driven detection and response to threats — including zero-days — in real time.
  • Storage provisioned to programs on demand regardless of classification, driving significant cost and operational savings.
  • Crypto-shredding to securely purge a project’s data per NIST media-sanitization standards and remediate data-spillage events.
  • An energy- and space-efficient footprint across multiple data centers supporting disaster recovery and continuity of operations (COOP).
