Eric Bednash and Chuck Mills, RackTop’s Senior Technologist & an end user expert discuss the complexities of VDI.
Chuck has co-authored the book, VMWare Horizon 6 Desktop Virtualization Solutions, which provides additional insight into VDI roll-out strategies.
When you’re an enterprise & you start thinking about VDI you must consider the environment and the resource needs of that environment to have optimal experiences. Consider what are your current resource needs are and ask how you can duplicate that as best as possible in a VDI environment.
Having a good methodology and approach is extremely important. Evaluate the environment and do an inventory of physical desktops, applications and application needs.
Experience with server virtualization does not translate to success in the VDI environment. Servers tend to run specialized applications which are a fraction of the amount running on desktops, which can run up to one hundred applications on them. Servers are controlled by IT policies but personal computers require consideration to the personalization needs of individual users.
VDI requires strategy, planning, infrastructure and skill set. Our product vBOX is geared to solve all of the most common problems associated with VDI rollout and is tuned to deliver the resources needed to run a certain number of desktops.
